Why Does My Internet Keep Disconnecting?

Repeated disconnects are usually the wireless hop or the modem session, not “the internet” as a whole. Note whether only one device drops, and whether a wired PC stays up.

One device vs the whole home

If only a phone drops, look at client roaming and battery Wi‑Fi. If every device drops, look at the WAN or AP.

Stability samples

Run the stability test. Growing jitter and failed HTTP probes during the drop window are useful evidence.

Power and firmware

Overheating APs and old firmware cause periodic radios to reset. Check logs on the gateway if you have them.

Frequently asked questions

Can a speed test prove disconnects?

A single throughput number cannot. A timed stability run is closer.

Should I replace the router first?

Only after Ethernet stays up and Wi‑Fi still drops.
