What Is a Good Internet Speed?

A good speed is one that meets the tasks on the connection with headroom. For one person, 25–50 Mbps download often covers HD video and browsing. Shared 4K homes usually want 100 Mbps or more, plus enough upload for calls.

Look at three numbers

Download moves streams and updates. Upload moves calls, cameras, and cloud files. HTTP ping affects games and meetings. A high download with 400 ms ping is not a good interactive connection.

Task ranges

Video calls often need a few Mbps up and down with stable latency. HD video is commonly around 5–8 Mbps per stream; 4K around 15–25 Mbps. These are application bitrates, not proof that a plan is “fast”.

Measure, then compare the plan

ISP ads quote a maximum. Wi‑Fi, time of day, and the test node change the result. Test more than once, and test on Ethernet if Wi‑Fi looks unfairly slow.

Frequently asked questions

Is 100 Mbps a good internet speed?

Yes for many households. Confirm upload and ping as well.

Why is my speed lower than the plan?

Wi‑Fi, old adapters, congestion, and the path to the test node all reduce throughput.
